Gary Lucy's Rendition of the BRIGHT STAR
The Bright Star Crossing the Missouri River
at the Washington, Missouri Landing, 1873
German settlers first arrived in the late 1820's at this site some 50 miles west of St. Louis on the Missouri River. The town of Washington was founded here in 1839 and many of the brick buildings seen in this picture still stand today.
The early inhabitants of Washington were exceptionally industrious with a strong work ethic, and the dominance and size of the churches on the skyline speak to their solid religious and moral convictions.
The single-stack BRIGHT STAR served for 11 years as a local ferry for resident businessmen, farmers and travelers. The larger side-wheeler DeSMET, seen at right, is pictured en route to Fort Benton, Montana, the northernmost port for large steamers.
